In May of 1919, three small planes set out from Newfoundland headed for London in an attempt to make the first trans-Atlantic flight. Only one of them made it. Twenty-five hundred feet below on board a station tracking ship, a young navigator, Lt. Cdr. Philip Van Horn Weems, U.S. Navy, gazed up and thought there must be a safer and simpler way than using a small armada of ships as beacons for the flight.
The challenge faced by Weems was intricate, requiring the creation of innovative methods and precision navigational tools. He developed a new sextant and the Second Setting Watch, which featured an inner rotating dial for improved accuracy. Weems dedicated his life to enhancing navigational instruments, expanding their use into fields like radio astronomy and space navigation. In the 1920s, he taught navigation at the Naval Academy and established a school in Annapolis where The Weems System of Navigation was used.
The Weems and Plath journey began in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay town of Annapolis. With a steadfast commitment to offering the finest nautical products and navigational instruments, they pride ourselves on upholding high standards of service that have set them apart since their inception. Today, they still produce their fine nautical products in Annapolis, Maryland.
