The mechanism operates using a mainspring, wound by the expansion and contraction of liquid and gaseous ethyl chloride within a sealed metal bellows. As the temperature increases, the ethyl chloride vaporizes into an expansion chamber, compressing a spiral spring. When the temperature drops, the gas collapses, allowing the spring to expand and wind the mainspring. This process ensures that the mainspring is continuously wound.​

 

The Atmos clock operates on minimal energy by ensuring that every component is as friction-free as possible. At the heart of its timekeeping mechanism is a torsion pend, which is designed to consume less energy than traditional pendulums. This innovative pendulum has a precise period of one minute, taking thirty seconds to rotate in one direction and thirty seconds to return to its starting position.
